Program Summary
The Moving Boundaries Global Symposium and Course in Japan is scheduled for November 23 - December 2, 2027. Join Part 1 in Kyoto only (5 days) or the full program in three locations (10 days). Tuition is more affordable for Part 1. We will live for several days in Kyoto. Select your retreat in one of three hotels to stay with the group. After two free days, we will travel to the art islands, where we will be immersed in nature and sacred history and rituals. We will be joined by 8 global experts in human sciences, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, health disciplines, architecture, architectural history and theory, philosophy, urban and landscape design, and in design of sacred spaces and gardens. In addition to faculty experts, including local specialists from Japan, we will be joined by participants from multiple disciplines, from around the world. Topics Include: Neurophenomenology; Memory and placemaking; Mirror neurons and empathy in design; Restorative places for human health and wellbeing; Somatic design; Body-conscious design; Forest bathing and the 7 Strategies of landscape design for health; Wayfinding and navigation; Grounding in nature; Spiritual architecture and design for the 21st Century - learning from ancient wisdom; Bridging human sciences and design; Neuroaesthetics; Biophilic design and more. Lodging will be in central Kyoto. Three hotels have been selected for our retreat to make it easier for all to live and eat together. Participants will book their lodging directly with the hotel (or Airbnb) according to their preferences. After the five days in Kyoto, everyone will select their preferred 2-day trip. After two free days, you may visit the art islands or Osaka and Kobe. There will be an all-day field trip, by ferry, on Naoshima Island, where we will visit several museums designed by Tadao Ando. We will also visit the magical Teshima Art Museum. In addition to studying at the interface of human sciences, design and health (as is the custom at MB), we will also experience local rituals, history, cuisine, arts, craft, nature immersion, and tours throughout the 10-day course, conference and retreat. All participants will be invited to submit an abstract for the symposium. Join Part 1 for 5 days or the full course for 10 days. The deposit is the same for both options. See this web page, below, for the daily schedule, list of confirmed faculty members, lecture abstracts, and the list of tours and immersive experiences.
