Dar Sernoff is the founder and operator of AMATE Atitlán, a boutique retreat on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, recognized by leading travel and design publications for its integration of architecture, nature, and experience-driven hospitality.

Dar conceived, designed, and built AMATE from the ground up, leading site selection, master planning, engineering coordination, construction management, interior design, branding, and guest experience as a single continuous practice. His approach treats a property not as a product to be finished, but as a living system to be cultivated.

Before hospitality, Dar spent fifteen years producing large-scale music and cultural events across multiple countries, work that trained him to think of space as choreography: how people enter, dwell, encounter each other, and leave changed. That discipline now runs through everything he builds.

His broader interests include architecture, placemaking, real estate development, and the economics of places that are also genuinely beautiful. He is drawn to how great environments sustain themselves, commercially, ecologically, and culturally, over time.

At Moving Boundaries Japan, Dar is most interested in Japan’s understanding of restraint, material honesty, and the conversation between interior and exterior. He comes not only to observe but to exchange, bringing the perspective of someone who builds places from intention rather than convention, and hoping to find others who do the same.
